Bureau of Indian Affairs (U.S. Department of Interior) - Limited information for searching Northeast ancestors, but contains the Tribal Leaders Directory for federally recognized tribes for 2007.
Cyndi’s List - Recommended 1st place to visit to begin genealogy research for everyone regardless of race or location. Everything you need to know to get started is here with many links on Native American resources, but unfortunately not enough on the Northeast tribes.
Abenaki Genealogy - This website is packed with good genealogy tips and links for Northeast Native Americans in the US and Canada. There are also links here for children, students and teachers.
Oneida Genealogy - Great site for Oneida research in NY, Wisconsin and Canada. Includes links to family histories, treaties, wars, reservations, Indian schools and more.
American Indian Library Association - Gives links to Native American journals, libraries, resource centers and more.
Godfrey Memorial Library - A library of genealogy and history. If you can spare $35 a year, this is the place to spend it for online genealogy. If you live near their location in Middletown, Connecticut, you can get a lot of good information free. We rate Godfrey high on the research scale, their librarians will conduct a search for you for a minimal fee.
Wiley Interscience - Despite it’s name, this is one of the best research resources we’ve found on the web. They’ve recently merged with Blackwell Synergy (also a misleading name) and have formed an amazing site to get journals and online books on every subject imaginable at no cost. This is the company that publishes journals for many of the US research centers. It may take a while to navigate, but once you see what they have, you’ll be happy you spent the time.
USGenWeb Project - Great website with great links to individual GenWeb sites by State, as well as projects such as the US Census - all available free. All of the State websites have good information to offer, and all of the sites are developed by volunteers, so some sites may have more to offer than others.
RI USGenWeb - Rhode Island genealogy, part of USGenWeb. Lots and lots of good links, we think this is the best source of Rhode Island links and resources on the web.
